Magnificent Malin Head shot wins national photography award

An amazing picture of the power of nature off Donegal’s coast has scooped the top award in the Clean Coasts 10th annual Love Your Coast Photography Awards.

Derry photographer Martina Gardiner won the overall 2019 prize with her image of waves towering over cottages at Malin Head.

The photo was taken during Storm Gareth, which battered the coastline in March 2019.

Describing the award-winning photo on Facebook, Martina said: “The storm was approaching violent storm force 11 and the sea state almost reached ‘phenomenal’. The scene at Malin Head on Tuesday evening was simply breathtaking – the power of nature so strongly evident.

“I spent an hour or so there hoping for some light and this was the moment that it was at its best. Photographically, the sea spray in high winds was so difficult to deal with – it softened the image so much but I really like the result.”

Martina’s high-impact photo was a winner in the Love Your Coast awards as it captured the essence of the Irish coast – its extensive beauty and diverse character.

A prize fund of €5,000 was presented to winners across five categories at the awards, which were announced on Wednesday night.
