Inishowen councillor, Jack Murray, has welcomed correspondence which has confirmed that the first draft of the Grianan of Aileach Conservation Management plan would be available to Donegal County Council by the end of the month.
The correspondence was received by Blackwood Associate Architects who have been appointed by the OPW to carry out the work.
Commenting on the development, Cllr Murray admitted he had become exacerbated with the delays in moving the Grianan project forward.
He said “Indeed it is over two and a half years since I called a meeting of all relevant stakeholders and the OPW to put forward a strategy on how best to promote this magnificent site.
“I am delighted now however that, at last, there is progress and the long-awaited conservation management plan will soon be available.
“This plan will specifically set out the parameters in which improvements to the visitor experience can be made, and acknowledges that issues regarding the interpretative signage.
“As Donegal County Council owns the car park at Grianan, I have asked that they engage fully with this process and work to install proper, state of the art, informative signage which tells the full history of Grianan and advises of what visitors are seeing in the spectacular views in all directions.
“I will also continue to push for a tour guide to recruited to work on site and for proper investment to be made to ensure that Grianan of Aileach reaches its full potential and becomes the premier tourist destination in the northwest of Ireland.”
