MEMBERS of the public are being asked only to present to the Emergency Department of Letterkenny University Hospital ‘in the case of real emergencies’.
Management at LUH have advised this evening that the Emergency Department is ‘extremely busy’.
What has been termed as ‘a significant number of ill patients’ have been admitted to the hospital with many of those still in the Emergency Department awaiting a bed.
Earlier today, Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) figures showed that 36 people were awaiting admission at LUH. 13 of those were on trollies with 23 on trollies in wards.
“Hospital management regrets the inconvenience and distress the long delays cause patients and their families,” a statement said.
“The hospital prioritises those in most need of care and this unfortunately may lead to delays for less urgent patients.
“We would like to remind the public that we encourage them to attend the Emergency Department only in the case of real emergencies and they should contact their GP or GP Out-of-Hours service in the first instance.”
