Parents’ parking habits putting schoolchildren in danger – Gardaí

Gardaí in Milford have issued a warning to parents to stop blocking school entrances with cars during drop-off and pick-up times.

The issue of double parking is putting children in danger, gardaí in the Milford district warn, as buses cannot access safe drop-off points.

“The result is dangerous with small children weaving in and out of parked and moving cars at the school gate, many of whom are too small to be seen by drivers pulling in and out,” said Garda Claire Rafferty.

Parents are being encouraged to be as proactive as possible when it comes to road safety and not to double park or park on yellow lines at schooltimes.

Garda Rafferty is also urging motorists to remember to heed signs and slow down when approaching schools.

Garda Rafferty said: “Another issue we have encountered recently in the Milford District is that some road users are not slowing down on the approach to schools and this is causing safety issues for traffic wardens who have reported cars being unable to stop in time at crossing points.

“We are currently monitoring the School areas and I would encourage drivers and parents to be mindful of children and their safety in and around schools. If the problem persists drivers will be prosecuted under the Road Traffic Act.”
