Taoiseach rules out pre-Christmas general election

The Taoiseach has told a Cabinet meeting that there will not be a general election before Christmas.

Leo Varadkar reiterated what he told a meeting of Fine Gael ministers earlier, that to hold an election now, while Brexit has not been fully resolved, was not in the best interests of the country.

At a post-Cabinet briefing this afternoon, Mr Varadkar once again denied media speculation that he was planning to call a general election before Christmas.

Earlier, Fine Gael TD Dara Murphy said he believed the public would be quite happy if a general election was held next month.

Last month, Mr Varadkar told a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting in Cork that May 2020 was the “right moment” for a general election because the Government would have either secured a Brexit deal or have “guided the country through the worst of no-deal”.
