Ballyraine National School in Letterkenny has been awarded the Health Promotion and Wellness Award.
HSE Health Promotions Officer Anne McAteer recently presented Principal David Oliver and senior students representing each class with the Health Promoting School (HPS) Flag which is awarded to schools in acknowledgement of their work in improving the health of their school communities.
A Health Promoting School focuses on health and well-being and involves the whole school community in planned actions.
Pupils, staff and parents are consulted to decide the priority health areas. An action plan is then developed addressing the health areas identified. Work is linked to the social and physical environment, curriculum, policies and partnerships.
Schools work at their own pace supported by Health Promotion. In school, a HPS Coordinator and Team lead out on the work, supported by the Principal, Board of Management and wider school community.
Schools that are part of this scheme have seen an increase in pupil self-esteem, less instances of bullying, a safer and more secure school environment and a co-ordinated approach to social, physical and environmental needs.
This is a huge achievement for Ballyraine NS as it is a culmination of all their hard work. They should be very proud of themselves!
