Figures show just how popular the Donegal GAA jersey is

THE DONEGAL jersey has rarely been more popular than in the last two of years.

At the launch of the new Donegal kit on Monday, it was revealed that Donegal’s jersey sales have been second only to Dublin over the last 30 months.

All-Ireland champions Dublin led the way for kit sales by manufacturers O’Neill’s Sportswear, but Donegal’s winning of the Ulster title in each of the last two summers has clearly had a big impact.

Donegal County Board Chairman Mick McGrath told Monday’s launch that 20,000 jerseys had been sold in the last two years.

“They have been sold all over the world and all over Ireland and the UK,” Mr McGrath said.

“There is a huge fan base out there. There is a big fan base in Donegal we are progressing. There is a huge amount of work going on and there are exciting things happening in Donegal.”

Donegal’s deal with O’Neill’s includes royalties off each item sold meaning the sales of jerseys and other official team wear has the potential to be a good money spinner.

McGrath said that the building at the Donegal GAA Training Centre in Convoy is almost ready for opening while the County Board have embarked on a big fundraising drive that includes a €100 ticket draw that has the first prize of a house in Dublin.

The new jerseys are again emblazoned with the logo of main sponsors KN Group and tier 2 sponsors, Abbey Hotel.

O’Neill’s Sportswear’s Kieran Kennedy said: “We’re looking forward to working together in 2020. O’Neill’s have a tradition of employing skilled personnel from across the north-west and we are embedded in this area. We have 736 people employed in Strabane and 950 on the island of Ireland. Our motto is to think global and employ local.”
