Tragic Lee to be laid to rest on Arranmore today

Arranmore Island will come to a standstill today for the funeral of RNLI volunteer Lee Early.

The 26-year-old drowned when his car went off the local Poolawaddy pier at 5am on Sunday morning last.

Another man in his 30s managed to escape and swam to safety to raise the alarm.

Lee will be laid to rest after noon mass at St Crone’s Church with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Members of the RNLI are expected to carry out a guard of honour at the church in memory of one of their own.

An autopsy was held on Lee’s remains at Letterkenny University Hospital on Monday last.

Lee’s remains were then escorted home by the Arranmore RNLI crew as they led two ferries that evening.

Hundreds of people have traveled from across Donegal and further afield for Lee’s wake at his island home.

A book of condolence has also been signed by hundreds of people at the Arranmore Community Centre.

The local Arranmore Hostel also offered free accommodation to anybody attending the wake or funeral in recent days.

A full Garda investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy is underway.

It is focusing on how the men’s car ended up in the freezing waters off the island.

Lee is survived by his dad Jimmy, mum Noreen, brother Adam and sisters Rachel and Laura.
