Cranford AC’s Caolan McFadden comes sixth in National Championships

SUNDAY saw nine qualifying athletes travel to the National Championships to represent Cranford AC, Donegal and Ulster.

Abbotstown provided a superb venue for this event, with mild weather the track was muddy and soft underfoot but this did not deter our determined Cranford athletes.

Cliodhna McBride, also representing Donegal and Ulster, ran a strong race of this 1500m course. Cliodhna finished strongly well up this huge field of almost 200 athletes.

Clodagh Neely, Miah Fletcher, Jessica Cullen, Amy Cullen, Ellie McFadden and Mevagh McBride all represented the club in the girls under 14 team competition.

From the gun these girls did what they could over this challenging 3k course, however it wasn’t to be their day. All girls did their best finishing this challenging course with pride.

Caolan McFadden demonstrated a cool head and experience beyond his years by staying in the lead pack throughout the two laps of this course. Caolan kept his ninth place position with these older athletes until the final 500m where he opened up and caught three more athletes to gain his sixth place in Ireland. A fabulous well run race by Caolan.

Oisin Kelly competed in the under 16 race over 4K, Oisin fought hard throughout and finished well up this large field of strong athletes.

Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday evening at Tramore Downing training ground, 6.30pm.

New athletes are welcome as training is now starting for the track and field season. Seven athletes have now qualified for the uneven ages championships in two weeks to be held in Dunboyne.

Thanks to all the coaches and parents who travelled to support the club in any way.
