Cold nights and frosty conditions are returning to the northwest following a recent spell of mild weather.
Temperatures are due to drop to lows of -2C in Donegal tonight (Thursday) with forecasters warning of a widespread frost, mist and foggy patches developing during the night.
Donegal County Council has ordered gritters to treat all main routes in the county tonight from 6pm.
Cold conditions will remain on Friday, with a “very chilly” start to the day and temperatures expected to rise no higher than 5-6C.
Met Eireann forecasters say the weekend will be “much drier and colder than average.”
Northern counties will see the coldest temperatures on Friday night, with lows of -2C forecast for the region. “Most areas dry on Friday night with temperatures below freezing in places with frost developing with some icy stretches in places,” said the weekend outlook.
Similar conditions are forecast for Saturday and Sunday nights, with more cool days and freezing nights in store.
