Greyhound racing fans told Lifford Stadium a ‘non-runner’

A report into the Irish greyhound industry could be the final nail in the coffin for Lifford Greyhound Stadium.

The independent review, published this week, recommends that support and funding should be cut from the stadium which closed in August.

The IGB has been advised to close down tracks at Lifford, Longford, Enniscorthy and Youghal due to financial instability.

Lifford Stadium closed its doors on 17th August, citing market pressures as the reason for closure.

The latest review said that the track would not be profitable if it reopened due to declining attendance, its location and a lack of registered greyhound breeders and trainers nationally who utilise Lifford. The Indecon report noted that consultants were impressed with the quality of infrastructure in Lifford.

A general view of Lifford Greyhound Stadium

Over 11,200 people attended races at Lifford Greyhound Stadium in 2018, where 573 races took place over 51 meetings.

Consultants said that the entire Irish greyhound sector will continue to struggle if the decline in attendance continues and if the existing cost base is not reduced, even with the closure of four recommended tracks.
