Concern as drink/drug-driving rise by 24% across Donegal

There is widespread concern following statistics which show that drink-driving and drug-driving is increasing across Donegal.

The latest Garda figures which compare last year to this year show a marked increase of 24% in drink driving and drug driving.

Last year there were a total of 258 people caught for drink-driving, drunk while in charge of a vehicle and drug-driving.

But so far this year up until October 1st, that figure has risen to 320.

The figures come despite widespread campaigns by both Donegal County Council and local Gardai warning people not to drink and drive or take drugs.

Operation Thor aimed at clamping down on driving offences including driving while drunk and drugged took place in September.

Gardai have also warned that they will be out in force during the Christmas period to enforce their zero-tolerance campaign to drink and drugs behind the wheel.
