MONA McSharry was in record-breaking form yesterday at the Irish Swimming Championships.

McSharry won gold in the 100m breaststroke final.

The Grange woman, who is a member of the Marlin’s Swimming Club in Ballyshannon, edged out Niamh Coyne in the final at the National Aquatic Centre.

Both swimmers were sub-1:06, with McSharry winning in 1:05.72 and Coyne just behind in 1:05.94.

McSharry won a bronze medal last week at the European Short Court Swimming Championships, taking bronze in the 50m breaststroke in an Irish record time of 29.87.

The 19-year-old helped break the Irish senior record in the women’s 4x200m freestyle event. In an exhibition relay, McSharry and her team of Victoria Catterson, Maria Godden and Rachel Bethel finished in 8:07.86.

That effort smashed the previous best of 8:25.94, which had stood since 1991.

McSharry is one of 11 nominees for RTÉ’S Young Sportsperson of the Year for 2019 with the awards ceremony taking place tonight.
