A call was made to Childline every two minutes on Christmas Day this year.
The 24 hour listening service for children received 793 calls, texts and online contacts on Wednesday – a decrease of 37% on last year’s total.
More children are contacting Childline via online contacts and texts, according to ISPCC CEO John Church, who said they often receive an increase in contacts on Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day.
Reasons for calls ranged from children witnessing or experience domestic violence, while loneliness was another issue this Christmas.
The calls and messages were answered by a team of 42 volunteers who give their time on Christmas Day to help children in need of support.
Childline services are available 24 hours a day at 1800 666 666, or online chat and text services can be contacted between 10am and 4am by visiting Childline.ie or texting to 50101.
