Plans are in place to develop a new campsite close to Sliabh Liag in south west Donegal.

The holiday park, located beside the Sliabh Liag visitor centre in Teelin, will include campervan pitches, glamping tents and children’s play areas for families touring the Wild Atlantic Way.

Planning permission has been granted for the park and it is envisaged that it will be opened in Spring 2021.

Sliabh Liag Camping is the dream project of Teelin native Ciarán McHugh.

He told Donegal Daily: “After returning home to Donegal last year from living in Dublin since college I had the dream to have my own business in Donegal and work in an area I love.

“I have always been keen on camping and seeing the increased numbers of tourists to Sliabh Liag and campervans, I began to plan the idea of the campsite over two years ago.

“With a lot of hard work, planning permission has been granted with thanks to Gavin and his team at Corner Stone Architecture who have been fantastic throughout the whole process.”

Up to 14 camper van parking bays and five towing caravan bays will be built on-site with associated services, along with a temporary service block building containing showers / toilets / reception area, family picnic areas and a play park.

The campsite is expected to create 5 or 6 jobs at high season.

With Sliabh Liag cliffs just 3km away, Teelin Bay and the Rusty Mackerel pub and restaurant nearby, the camp is situated in a very popular area for passing tourists.

Ciarán says the response to the development has been ‘amazing’ and he has been receiving positive messages from Irish camper clubs and people stateside who are looking forward to visiting and staying in the area.

“I hope the campsite will promote the Teelin and south west Donegal region more by promoting tourist stay (rather than coming to Sliabh Liag for a day trip) promote outdoor adventure tourism, marine tourism and create employment locally,” Ciarán said.

The project is currently at the funding and procurement stage and it is hoped that 2020 will see progress getting underway for phase one in spring 2021.
