A young woman has been killed in an overnight crash on the Fanad Peninsula.

The woman was the driver of a car which left the road at Drumfad Lower, Portsalon.

The single-vehicle accident happened around 11.30pm.

The woman, who is in her mid-20s and from the area, is the second person to die on Donegal’s roads in less than 48 hours.

A young man in the car in his 20s was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

In the early hours of St Stephen’s morning, a man in his early 30s also died in a single-vehicle accident.

Father-of-two Shaun Kelly was killed when his Vauxhall Cavalier car left the road at Porthall near Lifford before 12.30am.

He was rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital but died a short time later from his injuries.

The young woman who lost her life in last night’s tragedy has not yet been named.

She is the seventh person to die on Donegal’s roads so far this year.

It comes despite a major ongoing road safety campaign between local Gardai and Donegal County Council.

A full Garda investigation has been launched into the latest road tragedy while local road diversions remain in place.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users who may have camera footage travelling on the Kerrykeel to Portsalon road (R246) at approximately 11.30pm on Friday 27th December 2019, to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Milford Garda Station on 074 9153060, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
