A Donegal family was left badly shaken after a man tried to force his way into their home on Christmas Eve.

Gardaí are investigating the disturbing incident which occurred before midnight on 24th December in Ballyboe, Kilmacrennan.

The residents were still awake and sitting in their home when a man started “battering on the front door”, according to gardaí.

Despite knowing that the home was occupied, the man tried to force his way into the home.

The family had to use “sheer brute force” to stop the man getting through the front door and he then made his getaway.

Gardaí arrived at the home a short time later and carried out searches in the area, but were unable to track the man.

The incident is being treated as an aggravated burglary, and gardaí are appealing to the public to report any information which many help with the investigation.

They are calling on anyone who saw any pedestrians or vehicles strange to the area between 11pm on 24th December and 1am on 25th December to contact Milford Garda Station on 0749153060.
