Concerns have been raised about the safety of the Oliver Plunkett Road car park in Letterkenny, which is used by staff of the Department of Social Protection.

The matter was highlighted at the Letterkenny-Milford council meeting today, as Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh called on the council to take steps to improve lighting outside the office.

Cllr Kavanagh said that management is “very concerned about the car park in terms of safety”.

He explained that a number of incidents have occurred to spark the call for increased safety measures.

“Over 220 people work in that building, a lot of them are female,” Cllr Kavanagh explained.

“People need to feel safe going to their work in the morning and people need to feel safe in the evening.”

Cllr Kavanagh added that an initial request for CCTV in the area was not deemed possible. He asked that the council would meet with management at the Department of Social Protection to create proposals to increase safety in the car park.

He added that any measures would not only provide for staff but they will benefit clients too.
