‘Dark death trap’ road not suited for cats eyes

The road between Churchill and Letterkenny has been deemed unsuitable for the addition of cats eyes, despite safety concerns.

Local councillor Kevin Bradley described the road as a “dark death trap” as he called for road studs to be placed for nighttime lighting.

However, Cllr Bradley was told at this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford District that the category of the road, which is a Regional Road, means there is no policy to provide for cats eyes.

The local authority said that no funding is available for retrofitting of regional roads.

The council’s response said: “The current policy in relation to Road Studs is that they are provided on new higher speed roads and new rural national roads. There is currently no funded programme or policy in place for the retrofitting of road studs to Regional Roads.”

Members were told that “this matter should be referred to the Roads SPC for furtherance and development of a programme countywide if deemed appropriate.”
