St Columba’s College raise awareness for Climate Change

The students of St Columba’s College, Stranorlar, are once again turning their ‘Sunny Side Out’ as they participate in a Nationwide competition, ‘For the Love of Solar’, organised by Friends of the Earth.

Leading this exciting project is a very hard-working, conscientious and environmentally aware group, made up from students drawn from the Global Citizenship Education Committee and the Student Council within the school.

Everyone involved is motivated by the fact that they feel we all have responsibilities, to this generation and those coming after us.

Climate Change and its effects are at a critical stage, the students believing strongly that we all need to make changes now for a cleaner, brighter and more sustainable future.

The group aim to raise awareness around the environmental benefits of using solar panel sourced energy in Irish homes and schools and have done significant research on the topic, some of which they were able to tell Highland Radio listeners when they joined John Breslin for a chat in December.

The students say that most people just aren’t aware of solar panel energy or that they believe that it’s just too expensive, all of which their campaign hopes to reverse.

One staggering point they say is the fact that the junk email of the average inbox has the same carbon footprint as an average sized car travelling to Belfast and back!

The group plan to use the medium of social media and the local media to get their message out to the community.

This message is that solar energy is a clean and affordable alternative to traditional energy sources like oil and other fossil fuels and what possible changes in Irish planning policy that could help encourage further use.

The prize for competition winners is solar panels for their school.
