Donegal County Council has confirmed details of a new senior citizen housing complex to be built outside Ballybofey.

Up to 19 housing units will be built in the proposed development near The Weavers housing estate on the Trusk Road.

The communal facility will cater to the needs of elderly residents and “provide a more holistic solution to the current housing demand and aging population.”

According to details confirmed by Donegal County Council, “the development of the site will also provide higher quality and sustainable homes that will be enjoyable and safe for residents and provide a layout that functions well in terms of lifetime adaptable homes, access, servicing and security.”

Local Councillor Patrick McGowan has welcomed clarification on the development, which he says was the subject of a protest at a council meeting in Lifford nearly 15 years ago. He said the project has now been agreed between the Department and Senior Housing Engineer John Gallagher.

Cllr McGowan said: “Residents were left in limbo for a very long time but this announcement today from Council will bring some certainty, I still believe 19 houses are too many on such a small site even though they said it is a matter of value for money.”
