Donegal CIL, in partnership with Independent Living Movement Ireland, invites you to join them as they welcome the Donegal General Election 2020 candidates to discuss issues of importance to disabled people across the county.

This public meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 4 from 12.30pm to 2.30pm in the Radisson Blu Hotel Letterkenny and it is open to all disabled people, their family, friends and supporters.

Presented by Donegal CIL, which works to provide service, support and a voice on disability issues in Donegal, the event aims to put disability rights firmly back on the political agenda.

Donegal CIL Chairperson Cath Waugh explains election candidates need to understand that as people with disabilities we can speak for ourselves.

“We have repeatedly stated that we are simply looking for our rights as equal citizens in society – not charity.

“We believe that this could be achieved by working with and listening to people with disabilities and better utilization of the resources already allocated to the disability sector to enable us to see a real impact on our lives.

“We implore you all to unite on February 4th and explain to our election candidates that we are the real experts on what we need to live our own lives,” she said.

‘Our Voice Our Vote’ will offer delegates a unique opportunity to listen to people with the lived experience explain what it is like to live in a society, which still actively excludes people with disabilities.

Election candidates will be given an opportunity to clarify how they will work with people with disabilities to prioritize and ensure that we will be afforded the same equal rights as everyone else.

Cath Waugh explains it is vital that people attend in person and explain to the candidates what it is really like to live in Donegal with a disability in 2020.

“Nobody can speak for us but ourselves. We know what we need and this is our opportunity as voters and citizens to say it,” she said.

This event is open to everyone and is free to attend, with refreshments provided for all delegates.
