Gardaí have issued a stark warning after making a high number of drug-driving detections in the Letterkenny area last weekend.
Between Thursday and Monday past, nine people were caught driving whilst under the influence of drugs in the district.
“This is a frightening number of detections and it is so important that young drivers in particular get the message that they really are playing roulette with their lives if they drive while under the influence of drugs,” said garda spokesperson Garda Grainne Doherty.
Gardaí have again outlined the dangers and consequences that drug-driving poses to offenders and to victims.
Speaking in the community garda notice, Garda Doherty said drug drivers are “risking their own life and also risking the lives of other road users.”
“I think it is also important for young people to realise that if they are detected driving under the influence and are arrested and charged to court that they will face having a conviction for a drugs related offence.
“This will mean that their options for travel in the future will be very limited as they will not be allowed into many countries to live and work with such a conviction to their name.”
