Gardai have uncovered €5,000 worth of cocaine in a car in St Johnston.

The drugs were found when Gardai from the Buncrana Roads Policing Unit carried out a routine traffic stop yesterday afternoon.

The driver initially tested positive for driving under the influence of drugs.

Gardai then searched the car and found what they believe is a package containing €5,000-€6,000  of cocaine.

The driver was arrested and charged and is to appear at a future sitting of the courts.

The find comes after a spike in the number of drivers using drugs while behind the wheel.
