A CIVIC reception will be held on Thursday night in Letterkenny for representatives of the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF).

The Civic Reception is to mark the staging of the World Tug of War Indoor Championships, which get underway in Letterkenny tomorrow at the Aura Leisure Centre.

The TWIF representatives will be honoured at the Letterkenny Public Services Centre on Thursday night at 7pm.

The Civic Reception was proposed by Fianna Fáil County Councillor Ciaran Brogan.

“This is another good news story for Letterkenny and Donegal,” Cllr Brogan said.

“Danny McGonigle from Clonmany is the chairman of the organising committee and is being ably assisted by Glenswilly man, Cormac Gallagher.

“These two men have been working extremely hard over the last couple of years to get this high-profile event to the county. They are both really passionate about the sport and it’s great that their efforts have paid off.

“Danny has attended the world indoors for the last 43 years, pulling in 30 of those years for his country. This is another first for Letterkenny and Donegal and further enhances our reputation of having the facilities to hold an international competition of this nature.”

Competitors – numbering in excess of 500 – from over 20 countries are in Letterkenny for the Championships.

The weigh-in took place this morning with competition running from Thursday-Sunday at the Aura Leisure Centre.

Cllr Brogan said: “The World Indoor Tug of Ward Indoor Championships will have a major economic benefit to Letterkenny and Donegal and the amount of work that went on behind the scenes to get things to this point can’t be overemphasised enough.

“I think it is only fitting that we as a council mark these championships by affording the representatives from TWIF a civic reception.

“I wish all involved well and would encourage people to go along and experience the event for themselves. It promises to be a great weekend for the locality.”
