Mourners visiting a Letterkenny cemetery are “putting their life in danger” due to cars speeding past the entrance, two county councillors have warned.
Cllr Kevin Bradley has this week called on the local authority to implement a higher speed restriction at the entrance to Leck Graveyard in Letterkenny.
However, as the road already has a 50kph speed limit, the council said the matter should be dealt with by gardaí.
Cllr Kevin Bradley raised the issue at the Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting and said that people coming to visit the graves of loved ones are putting themselves in danger on the busy road.
Cllr Bradley said a man going to visit his wife was “nearly cut in two”, while Cllr Donal Coyle said that anybody walking out of the graveyard is “putting their life in danger” as cars speed over the blind crest.
The council responded to the motion to say no previous speeding issues were reported on this road. The roads department is due to bring the matter of speeding to the attention of the gardaí at the next CPI meeting and the public should report speeding and dangerous driving to gardaí.
