Gardaí have issued a public warning after a woman in Letterkenny was targetted in an elaborate scam.

The scam involved a person, claiming to be from an electricity company, who arrived at the woman’s house to take a meter reading. A few days later, a bill turned up at the woman’s door, but it was not from any legitimate company.

Gardaí shared details of the incident on Facebook today to warning others to be vigilant for this particular scam:

“We received a report from a lady in the Letterkenny area that a man was on her property a few days ago and he informed her that he was there to do an electricity meter reading.

“She then received an estimated bill in the post and she contacted her electricity company. They informed her that nobody had been out to do a meter reading on their behalf.

“The lady in question wanted to make others aware of what had happened.

“Be vigilant. If anyone is on your property and you do not know them and have concerns about them, contact the Gardaí. Please do not approach them yourself.”
