Arranmore students praised for innovation accident-prevention idea

Four Donegal students are about to go to market with a modern and unique idea that addresses a key road safety issue.

The Transition Year student team, from Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada on Arranmore, has developed a useful product for all motorists to have stored in their cars.

The new product is a sticker that identifies when occupants have been removed from a vehicle involved in a collision. The innovative idea is to be marketed by the students which they hope will be an essential requirement in all vehicles.

The product is a reflective sticker with the word “RECOVERED” printed on an adhesive strip which can be fixed to a vehicle which has been involved in a collision informing other motorists or pedestrians that no occupants remain in that vehicle and for their safety; the vehicle should not be approached by any motorist or pedestrian passing the scene of the collision.

Students Katie Ward, Maggie Gallagher, Mia Baikie and Conor Walsh, who call themselves the RRSS Group, are about to bring the product to market this year.

The team plans to contact motor dealers to demonstrate the product and highlight the importance of their idea. The ideal scenario would be if the product was never to be used but unfortunately collisions do occur and this product would be an essential requirement to be in all vehicles.

The Slogan for their RRSS Group is ‘Don’t let one accident lead to another’ and will be showcased at the Udaras na Gaeltachta event for schools on Wednesday 26th February.

Brian O’Donnell Road Safety Officer stated, “I would like to commend the TY students from Gairmscoil McDiarmada, for their road safety initiative and I would like to wish Katie, Maggie, Mia and Conor every success with the sale and marketing of their product. Road safety is an issue that touches us all, with young people at particular risk and it is encouraging to see young students developing innovative products, which highlight road safety”.
