Brief storm respite enables a Sheephaven Sunday snorkel

AFTER another weekend of poor weather, which consisted of winds gusts so severe one would be forgiven for thinking it was the storm ‘with no name’, Sheephaven divers found a weather gap long enough to get into the water on Sunday morning.

The brief respite allowed for the Sunday morning snorkel to go ahead in the confines of PortnaBlagh harbour, where the impact of the prolonged poor weather was clearly evident in the sea state.

The incoming northerly swell was crosscut by the waves thrown up by the west wind, but still it was well worth the challenge to enjoy the rawness of a February morning in the sea.

Water temperature remains cold at not much above 8 degrees celsius, but quite manageable for 30 minutes in good quality wetsuits.

No such luxuries for another group of Sunday morning swimmers, the Dunfanghy Dippers who appeared in their swimming togs and took to the water at the same time as the Sheephaven divers, hardy folk indeed!

Well done to everyone who embraced the weather and got the best out of their Sunday morning.
