A retired Company Sergeant from Donegal has set out to gather details about local soldiers who carried out peacekeeping duties in the Congo in the 1960s.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Irish troops participating with the UN on missions in the Congo in central Africa.

Eddie Crawford, who served with the 28 Inf. Bn. in Donegal is marking the anniversary by recording the names of Donegal soldiers from this time. It is intended to celebrate this part of history with the UN later this year.

Irish Soldiers in the Congo

Mr Crawford said: “Much has been written and rightly so of the Siege of Jadotville during that mission which included men from Donegal.

“We’ve had soldiers from Donegal who have served throughout the mission between 1960 and 1964.

“I’m compiling a list of these brave men and would be grateful for the public’s help in this regard.”

If you have any information to contribute to this commemoration, please email donegalpeacekeepers@hotmail.com with the following details:

  • The name of the soldier
  • What part of Donegal were/are they from?
  • What Unit did they serve there with?
  • And finally a contact number?
