A woman who admitted giving a social welfare identity card to another man so he could pose as her boyfriend to collect cash has been fined.
Rosemarie Ward appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with the offence.
Garda Harvey Maughan told the court that on July 19th, 2017, a man tried to claim €102 using another man’s public identity card.
However, eagle-eyed staff knew the card did not belong to the man at the counter and refused to hand over the cash.
Ms Ward of Robinson Hall, Ramelton Road, Letterkenny, immediately told post office staff that the card belonged to her partner and that he could not collect the money in person as he was in hospital.
Solicitor for Ms Ward, Mr Kieran O’Gorman said his client was under a certain amount of pressure to get the money.
The court was told that Ms Ward, who is no longer in a relationship with the man, has no previous convictions and has not come to Garda attention since this incident.
Judge Paul Kelly ordered the woman to pay €100 to the Letterkenny Youth and Community Club.
He adjourned the case until May 11th and said if the cash is paid he will strike the matter out.
