A leading Donegal doctor has called for all St Patrick’s Day parades ot be cancelled.

Dr Dara Scally, is one of three GPs who head up the well-known Scally Practice in Letterkenny.

Dr Scally said it simply makes no sense to allow such gatherings of people during the threat of the spread of the coronavirus.

She said that Ireland is heading into a time of great uncertainty with regard to the coronavirus.

Dr Scally pointed out that the Irish healthcare sytem is already at breaking point even before the virus catches a proper hold here.

She said “As a GP working at the coalface, in a health care system already at breaking point, I am genuinely worried and concerned for my patients.

“I am calling for St Patrick’s Day parades to be cancelled to help us prevent or at elast slow down the spread of this virus.

“It makes absolutely no sense to host a street party for thousands of people when the rest of Europe is going into lockdown.”
