New app helping Gardaí catch driving offences across Letterkenny

A number of Letterkenny motorists were caught last weekend with no tax, no NCT, no insurance and one disqualification – all thanks to a new app for Gardaí.

The Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit have tapped into a new device to check car history and tax status on the roadside. The device scans the registration plates and automatically returns relevant data. The device can also scan a driving licence and automatically return real time information to the Garda.

With the help of the ACTIVE mobility app, gardaí in Letterkenny detected a vehicle that has had no tax for two and a half years and no valid NCT. This vehicle was also not insured.

The mobility app also helped in the detection of a driver who was driving whilst disqualified and they now face charges of driving without a driving licence and no insurance.

In a separate case, a driver was caught under the influence of cocaine.

The three motorists will appear in court at a future date.
