Residents of the Golf Course Road in Letterkenny have expressed fears over the danger of weakened trees in the area.
The council has been urged to take action and cut back overhanging trees on the road, which motorists say are in danger of falling.
Local Councillor Donal Coyle raised the matter at this week’s Letterkenny Milford MD meeting and said there is a “grave concern” among residents.
Cllr Coyle said that many trees have overhanging branches which are covered in ivy, which weakens the branch and presents a danger of falling. He added that the trees are also interfering with public lights.
Cllr Donal Kelly backed Cllr Coyle’s motion and said that the frequency of storms is also a factor with this issue.
“It’ll be too late if a tree falls on top of a car and somebody is killed,” Cllr Kelly said.
The local roads department has agreed to arrange to get an inspection of the trees on the Golf Course Road and “develop measures as appropriate”.
