Gardaí aid isolated pensioner and urge people to check on neighbours

DONEGAL Gardaí responded to a call rom an elderly pensioner who felt anxious and isolated today – bringing them some essential supplies.

The pensioner, who lives alone, told Gardaí how they felt lonely amid the shutdown of businesses across the country in response to the escalation in the spread of Covid-19.

Schools and public businesses closed on Thursday while pubs were last night ordered to shut down.

Members of An Garda Síochána went to the shop and collected some items, which they left to the pensioner.

An Garda Síochána said: A good chat was had on the phone and then a few items they needed were collected for them and left at their door. They will now be put in contact with an agency who will help them from here.”

The Letterkenny Community Policing Unit is on call from 7am-7pm daily.

They say: “We will help if we can while following advice from the HSE. We can be contacted on 074-9167100. Please call us if you know of anyone who may need our support or help.

“Please check in on your elderly or vulnerable neighbours and friends by phone. A few minutes on the phone may not mean much to you but it might just be the only contact they will have with the outside world all day. We can all help each other get through this challenging time.”

Meanwhile, the public office at Letterkenny Garda Station remains open and the Gardaí have issued the following advice:

If you feel you need to contact An Garda Síochána within the Letterkenny District in person please only call in between 7am and 7pm as there will be limited access to the stations. We will however continue to provide a 24/7 sevice to the public.

In an emergency always dial 999/112 – You should use this service if a crime or incident is happening now or if anyone is in immediate danger.

Non-emergency or general enquiries: For non-emergency or general enquiries, you contact your local Garda Station by Telephone and Email. Letterkenny Garda Station 074-9167100, Buncrana Garda Station 074-9320540, Milford Garda Station 074-9153060 and Ballyshannon Garda Station 071- 9858530.

Contact details for all Garda stations and key offices are available at www.Garda.ie
