Significant new COVID-19 restrictions expected today

A RANGE of significant new COVID-19 restrictions will be announced today following a meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) this morning.

An announcement is expected later today with a raft of measure likely to see non-essential businesses, such as hairdressers, cafés and restaurants closed.

The Government is also likely to announce new restrictions to limit outdoor gatherings while strict implementation of physical distancing will be rolled out for public parks and beaches.

While the new measures can be expected to be significant, they will not be as severe as the effective lockdown that is in place in the UK, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned the public to ‘stay at home’.

However, non-essential travel will be restricted while the existing measures that include the closure of schools, pubs and public buildings like libraries and universities will be extended. Those measures were in place until Sunday, March 29, but that date will now be pushed back further.
