Donegal chef becomes a kitchen hero for families at home

A Donegal-based chef is serving up easy cooking tips with a new online project during the coronavirus crisis.

John Conmy, Executive Head Chef of The Lakehouse Hotel, is using his time off to help families reduce food waste and cook up tasty and healthy meals together.

The award-winning chef has launched a Facebook page Zero Waste Hero Taste with video guides to delicious dishes anyone can make at home.

With people shopping less frequently in an effort to social distance, problems can arise with bulk buying and over-buying food that can go off.

John’s daily recipes encourage families to make the most of the ingredients already in their cupboards and fridges. Mexican chicken enchiladas, Boxty, fruit bread and scones, pizza, breakfasts, curries and many more dishes have been on the menu over the last 20 days.

John said: “These dishes that are easy to follow can be made to your own tastes and will surely go a long way to help people save money at such an uncertain time that we are in. It’s a great way to try out new ideas and its a great fun if you can get the kids involved.

“The feedback we have received so far on Facebook has been phenomenal and the amount of people that have sent in their own photos and comments after trying out the dishes has been non-stop.

“It is very satisfying to know there is being a difference made in such a short space of time and we can only hope to do more in the coming weeks.”

Follow Zero Waste Hero Taste for all the tasty food inspiration.
