A LIFFORD man who has tested positive for Covid-19 while undergoing treatment in hospital has warned people to heed the Government’s lockdown advice.
Daniel McNulty, who is 32, was admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital yesterday for his latest bout of cancer treatment.
As he had a high temperature reading, Daniel was assessed for Covid-19 and this morning he was informed that he had tested positive for the virus – and says the news came as an ‘eye opener’.
“I am more sick at the thought of me giving it to my kids than the thought of me having it,” Daniel told Donegal Daily.
“I didn’t even think I could have had the virus until I was tested. The only good thing is that I wasn’t in contact with too many people.”
According to the latest figures from the HSE, 15 people in Donegal have tested positive for Covid-19.
Last night, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced the country was going into effective-lockdown until Easter Sunday, April 12.
Only essential travel is permitted, exercise is allowed only within 2km of a person’s own home, while the over-70s and vulnerable will be ‘cocooned’.
Father-of-two Daniel, who has been an active footballer with Donegal League club Kildrum Tigers – winning a Saturday League and Cup double last season -, said: “Stay in the house 24/7. I know it will be hard, but it will be worth it.
“Even going to the shop – use delivery services if they are available. If you go outside for stupid reasons, you could pick it up and pass it on to children or other family members.
“Imagine if your kids were stuck with Covid-19 in a private room in a hospital, all by themselves with no-one allowed in to see them.
“Anyone who goes outside for silly reasons is only going to prolong this situation.
“Call on any vulnerable family members every day to check on them, but stay away from them unless it’s an emergency.
“I got my eyes open today. It’s safer for everyone to stay inside the house for two weeks and hopefully we’ll get over it.”
