GAA to hold Special Congress to determine 2020 Championship direction

THE GAA will hold a Special Congress next week via conference call to enable the altering of the 2020 football and hurling Championships.

The Special Congress will be held next Friday, April 17, and will have just one item on the agenda.

A motion will be put to county delegates in the conference call to authorise the Management Committee to make decisions on the format during the coronavirus pandemic.

This, essentially means that the Management Committee will have the power to make changes as they see fit.

A remote meeting of the GAA’s Central Council was held yesterday.

The lockdown measures announced by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar two weeks ago today are set to be extended.

That means that the GAA’s remote hopes of beginning their Championships on schedule will be ended.

Donegal had been due to host Tyrone on May 17 in the Ulster SFC. Dates will now be pushed back into the summer with the actual format of the Championships now up for debate within the GAA’s upper echelons.
