A man has been remanded in custody after he broke into the parochial house grounds in Letterkenny in the early hours of this morning, Easter Sunday.

Gardai arrived at the house after reports of a break-in just before 3am.

A large number of windows and doors had been smashed on the premises, mainly to the diocesan archives building.

Inside the property, Gardai also discovered damage to the building including damage to a number of religious statues.

A 24 year-old man was arrested at the scene by Gardai and taken to Letterkenny Garda station.

Nobody was injured during the break-in and it is not believed anything was taken.

Gardai managed to arrest the man who was the only person involved in the attack.

The accused appeared before Judge Paul Kelly at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court.

The man was charged with both criminal damage and burglary.

Gardai also indicated that a number of other charges may be brought before the court at another date.

Judge Kelly remanded the accused in custody and he was brought to Castlerea Prison.
