Donegal Garda Chief stresses importance of continued compliance

Donegal Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn has called on the public to continue to keep up their high compliance with Covid-19 restrictions.

As measures were eased slightly from Tuesday, gardaí are continuing their checkpoints and high visibility patrols across the county. Tourist locations, natural beauty spots, and parks and beaches are still being monitored as all non-essential journeys are still not allowed.

Gardaí have observed that the vast majority of people are adhering to the public health guidelines.

Chief Supt Terry McGinn has emphasized that it is important that this compliance with the public health advice and the regulations surrounding essential travel remains to protect vulnerable people in the community and continue to save lives.

“An Garda Siochána continues to encourage the public to adhere to the Government advice, particularly for the most vulnerable in our society. I’d like to thank the public in Donegal for their co-operation to date. The public health advice has changed only slightly from Tuesday May 5, 2020, which has enabled the public to take exercise within 5km of their home, and those cocooning can go out for exercise within a 5km distance of their home providing they have no contact with others. All other measures in relation to essential travel, social distancing, and keeping to your household unit remain in place until May 18,” Chief Supt McGinn said.

A cross border approach has been adopted in Co Donegal, and cross border Covid-19 checkpoints have been taking place in cooperation with the PSNI and these continue this week.

A full guide to these measures are available on www.gov.ie.

“We understand this is a difficult time for families and for vulnerable and at risk groups and we are here to assist to enable those groupings to cocoon and remain safe,” she concluded.

Members of the public who are concerned or who need assistance to do this can contact any Garda Station for help.

There is also a dedicated Covid-19 Community Response Helpline 1800 928982, which can be of assistance to those over 70 or those advised to cocoon. A local email address is also available to assist at covidsupport@donegalcoco.ie seven days
a week from 9am to 5pm.
