A man has been arrested by Gardai in connection with today’s gorse fire in Annagry.

The man, who is in his 50s and from the area, was taken to Milford Garda station for questioning.

Gardai confirmed to Donegal Daily the man is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

No other details of the arrest are available at this time.

Up to 60 locals, as well as firefighters from Dungloe and Falcarragh, fought the blaze which broke out in the early afternoon.

It is the latest in a series of gorse fires to have broken out in the region in recent days.

Last Wednesday there was a total of ten outbreaks in just one day.

Many of the fires were accidental but locals believe yesterday’s fire was started deliberately.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed “Gardaí investigating gorse fires in the Ranafast area, Co. Donegal have arrested a man aged in his 50s today, Monday 11th May 2020.

“The man is currently detained in Milford Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 Investigations ongoing.”
