A Donegal garda has issued a plea to motorists not to flash their lights to warn other road users of upcoming Covid-19 checkpoints.
The issue arose after three cars were observed flashing their lights to an off-duty garda on Monday.
Garda spokesperson Grainne Doherty, commenting during Donegal’s Community Garda notice, said the motorists were alerting her to a Covid-19 checkpoint ahead.
This practice prevents gardaí carrying out their public safety duties during the pandemic.
“These checkpoints are out there for the benefit of everybody’s protection,” Gda Doherty said.
“We are not out there to ‘get’ people, we are out there for the benefit of the community.”
Gda Doherty has appealed to road users to stop this practice of warning other motorists if there is a checkpoint ahead.
“Hopefully we are saving lives by conducting these checkpoints, and reminding people and encouraging them to adhere to the restrictions.”
