Gardaí have issued a warning over a recent smishing SMS phishing scam (smishing) which attempts to gain a person’s bank details.
The scam occurs when customers are contacted by a text message falsely claiming to be from their bank. These messages contain links which connect customers to fraudulent websites designed to imitate bank websites. The sites trick customers into making payments or providing personal information or other security details.
Gardaí took to Facebook to remind people to never respond to unsolicited messages and never follow links received through these types of messages.
“Remember, your bank will never text or email you asking for personal, login or card information,” the warning said.
“If a member of the public receives any texts like this, they should report the matter to your local Garda Station or to the Garda Confidential line on 1800-666-111.”
