‘Defendants only’ – Judge says family, friends not permitted in court

June 15, 2020

A JUDGE has reminded those attending court for hearing that family and friends are not permitted to be in the courtroom.

At today’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court, Judge Paul Kelly addressed the matter.

As Judge Kelly began proceedings this morning in court number two, there were 27 people, including court staff, legal representatives, Gardaí, members of the media and other practitioners in attendance.

A large amount of others, mainly defendants, were present in the lobby of the court.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, 21 people are permitted in the courtroom at any one time.

“You come in when your case is called,” Judge Kelly said.

“There are only 21 people permitted in here and it should be practitioners only. Family and friends are not permitted to be in here.”

During one case, Judge Kelly asked that the mother of a defendant leave the courtroom.
