Luke McAteer gets first winner of season on 12/1 shot

DONEGAL jockey Luke McAteer was toasting a 12/1 winner yesterday.

McAteer guided the 12/1 shot Beauchamp Bagenal to victory at Gowran Park for his first win of the season.

Aboard the Barry J Fitzgerald-trained five-year-old, McAteer had a head to spare on 11/2 Trueba, with Nikita Kane in the saddle.

Over the seven furlongs, McAteer and Beauchamp disputed the lead at the midway point and hit the front three furlongs from the post.

McAteer was able to hold the narrow advantage for home.
