Volunteers with Donegal Mary’s Meals launched their annual “Step by Step” walk to Knock today with some new measures due to the pandemic.

Each year, people from all over Ireland join the Walk to Knock, raising vital funds to help feed hungry children in some of the world’s poorest communities.

This year’s walks will proceed on a reduced scale in line with Covid 19 guidelines.

Public support is urgently required to help make this year’s fundraiser a success.

Traditionally, walkers set off from five starting points across the country. Over nine days – between 7-15 August – participants on each route cover more than 200 miles as they make their way to the Marian shrine in County Mayo.

In order to more easily adhere to the Covid 19 restrictions, there will be the option of a local walk which will take place in conjunction with the main walk which people can complete nearer to your home. More details of the local walks will be published in the near future.

A Mary’s Meals spokesperson said: “We hope that you can join us for this year’s walk to Knock whether at home or in your local area. Anyone interested in organizing a walk in their local area can contact us by telephone on 087 7080736.  Every little helps, especially now when so many face great difficulty finding food and keeping their families safe with so little resources.”

“The UN recently published a report calling for urgent attention to be given to the plight of children globally. It highlights the catastrophic effect that loss of school meals during the coronavirus pandemic could have in the world’s poorest countries.

“Through our Covid-19 response activities, we are now reaching nearly all of the children who rely on our nutritious meals at home. Working with governments, community leaders and our trusted partners, we have developed new methods of distribution to reach children in their communities and provide food to them at home, until it is safe for them to return to the classroom.”

If you’re unable to take part in a walk this year but would still like to help out, please let the team know. There are loads of ways to get involved, whether it’s taking part in a bucket collection or volunteering as a marshal on one of the routes.

“If you can, please help Mar to keep reaching the children who rely on Mary’s Meals each school day – your donations, prayers and support are needed now more than ever.”

You can sign up for the walk on our website at https://www.marysmeals.ie/stepbystep/  or contact any member of Marys Meals in your local area.

Thank you for your continuing generosity, support and help to feed some of the world’s poorest children.

Marys Meals are also proud to present their new film LoveReachesEverywhere featuring Hollywood star Gerard Butler:
