FACE coverings on all public transport is mandatory from today as new regulations come into effect.

The new law means that commuters now face stiff penalties for non-compliance.

Those in breach of the law face fines of up to €2,500, as well as a possible prison sentence of six months.

The new law comes into being as 65 confirmed cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last three days.

A drover can now request that a passenger wear a face covering and those who refuse can be refused entry or asked to leave.

In special circumstances, exemptions are provided for. These are for persons unable to wear one due to any physical or mental illness, impairment or disability.
