It’s not often student musicians can say they were taught by one of the best-known fiddle players in the world.
But Covid lockdown has led Donegal’s own Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh to try her hands at online lessons.
Normally Mairead and her band Altan would be touring the world in the summer months.
But with the entertainment industry and all gigs on hold, the Gaoth Dobhair native is at a loose end.
Not one to sit around, Mairead has decided to teach students many of the songs passed down to her by her father Francie Mooney.
Mairead told fans “On my travels I have been asked so often would I teach the fiddle, teach a few tunes.
“I really haven’t had any time to do that until now. So here you are with tunes I was brought up with in County Donegal, tunes that my father Francie Mooney taught me, tunes I got from neighbours and from fellow Donegal fiddlers.
“It’s all based on the oral tradition of ‘passing it down’ and I hope you’ll enjoy them.”
