Vigilance urged as heating oil theft remains an issue

HOME owners have been urged to be vigilant with the theft of home heating oil continuing to be a regular occurrence.

Particularly, holiday home owners have been warned to be mindful.

“There seems to be a rise in oil thefts,” James Trearty told a meeting of the Donegal County Joint Policing Committee on Friday.

“People are returning to holiday homes and discovering that their tank has been drained. This is a pretty mean type of larceny.”

Inspector Denis Joyce said that the issue ‘continues to be a problem’.

“People should be cautious and put a lock on their tank or install CCTV,” he said.

“Businesses and schools have experienced thefts. Just make sure to have a lock on the oil and monitor it on a regular basis.”

Inspector Joyce noted that two men had been convicted of equipment theft, relating to the theft of home heating oil, recently in a Donegal court.
